In PHP terms, a SMS-Gateway is a server which you can use to send SMS messages to mobile phones, often using an API provided by the gateway company.
I used to use something like this to send notifications to my users. It was quite easy.
What happens is you buy SMS credits and you use that to send SMS's.
You get a key, username and password in which you use to authenticate. Most company solutions are quite simple and strait forward.

SMS gateway is the term used to describe a service transforming messages to mobile network traffic from other media, or vice versa, allowing transmission or receipt of SMS messages without the use of a mobile phone. Typical use of a gateway would be to forward simple e-mail to a mobile phone recipient.
