In B737 3-4-5, when mcp speed changing from Knots to Mach?

    Per the B737 AFM, Automatic changeover occurs at approximately FL260. If you have access to an AFM, and want to read it yourself, search for IAS/MACH; that's how I found it.

    I'm fairly certain that the exact changeover occurs so that the most limiting of the two factors is the one being displayed. For instance, at 18,000', it is impossible to reach Mmo before reaching Vmo, so the speed is shown in knots. At FL310, the limit is the mach speed, so mach is shown. As with most jets, which factor is limiting occurs somewhere in the mid 20s.

    To expand upons Rick's answer: the changeover speed on the B-737 100 and 200 was 23,456'.

    That was an oral question over twenty years ago, and I still remember it.
