She is what you call a classical-popular crossover singer.
Another famous artist like her is Katherine Jenkins, she is a mezzo-soprano.
Maybe you'd enjoy some Kristen Chenoweth, but she's more broadway.
For the hard-core stuff, listen to/start out with
Diana Damrau- Una Voce Poco Fa or Glitter and be Gay
Natalie Dessay- Les filles de Cadix
Kathleen Battle- Lo, here the gentle lark
Lucia Popp= O Zittre Nicht or the famous Queen of the Night aria
Anna Netrebko- Habanera
Patricia Petibon- Les filles de Cadix
do your research there are great opera divas out there.

Sarah Brightman is about as far from opera as Tiny Tim. Her claim to fame was being Mrs. Andrew Lloyd Weber and taking on the role as Christine Dore in his version of Phantom of the Opera.
From there she went on to the world stage along with Andrea Bocelli. (Another non-opera singer). Between the two of them and some clever marketing they took the unsuspecting (and uninformed populous) by storm.
Her genre is light classic, Broadway, some microphoned arias.
So, you're a part of the hood-winked masses that go for mediocre music and deep-pockets marketing.
You'll probably like Kristin Chenoweth as well.
... except that Ms Chenoweth exudes much more personality.

Sarah Brightman has really nothing to do with opera... she is a pop singer.
Suggestions... sure - how about some real opera. Check out Angela Georghiu.

Well, other operatic sopranos are as good as Sarah.
Try Marliyn Horne, Joan Sutherland, Mirella Freni, and Beverly Sills...and the newest operatic diva, Cecilia Bartoli, just for starters...
Then......
African-American sopranos are also on the list for you to hear. Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, and the one who started it all...Marian Anderson.

Yes, I do know about Sarah Brightman, but she is NOT an opera singer.
As for suggestions, I happen to have plenty. As an operaphile, I highly recommend that you get on youtube and check it out.
