Do postage stamps ever expire?

I've read somewhere that postage stamps never expire and will always be worth what's printed on them. If this is true, I'm curious about one thing: how do they actually know if the postage stamp I affix on my letter is actually genuine? Let's say I've decided to send a letter today (2012) using some stamps from 1950. They've issued LOTS of kinds of stamps since 1950...lots of designs, etc. do they actually have to check whether or not the particular stamps design I affixed on my letter REALLY existed (i.e. is legitimate) and is actually real before cancelling it??

Thanks!

All unused United States postage stamps issued since 1862 (except one) are still valid for postage. (The exception is the precancelled Xmas stamp of 1974 which looks like this:

How the post office determines what is or is not valid postage is beyond me.

Stamps never expire. It is proof of a tax paid for mailing something, and as such are always valid, until used or spent.

However, using a stamp that is 50 years old would be very wasteful. The stamp would be worth much more to a collector than the face value. You would do better to sell it to a collector, and buy a couple of new stamps for that money.

Most often, when letters go through the automatic cancellation machines, those old stamps, or any other stamp, will be rejected because it does not have the fluorescent mark on it. It then needs to be hand cancelled, and they will find out whether it is a valid stamp or not.

Stamps remain legal and never expire as long as they have never been used; As long as they have remain fixated to the original item that you bought them on (they cannot ever have been adhered to anything).

I am not sure about using stamps that 60 or so years old. I would contact your local post office to see if these are still valid. (THOUGH I would hold onto them because they will probably be worth money as a collectible if in good condition).

The cost of mailing an item goes up so in a way it sort of looses it's value, but it doesn't expire.
