I've seen a couple of electronic logbooks you can use as a private pilot on a laptop computer, but eventually the pages need to be transcribed to paper in order to make a permanent record. If the 'Feds' want to see your logbook, they want it on paper anyway. Electronic data is too easy to lose or modify.

The FAR is a government document, hence, it's somewhat vague, as usual on this subject. Section 61.51 states only that: "(a) Training time and aeronautical experience. Each person must document and record the following time in a manner acceptable to the Administrator. "

It never explains WHAT EXACTLY is acceptable to the Administrator. Obviously, when this was written, electronic documents did not exist, and it was not until recently that "electronic signatures" were invented and incorporated into electronic media.

Either way, a verifiable signature is necessary. Regardless of media, we're talking about a legal document. Whatever you use, it should be clearly admissible in a court of law should civil or criminal proceedings follow an "incident," and you should not commit perjury with false entries.

I prefer paper. It doesn't break with you drop it; it can always be photocopied and endorsed with a fresh signature if the original is lost, forgeries can be revealed, and criminals won't break into your car or house just to steal it. And you don't lose time waiting for constant Windows updates...

Sorry guys, all three of you are ded wrong. The FAA does not REQUIRE your log to be on paper. The only guidance they provide can be found in § 61.51. A electronic log is acceptable to the administrator provided it has the ability to record required signature(s)for an instructor to log training time. For me, I use both paper and Excel 2010

I do love to have a electronic version to all kind of aircraft related paper material, because they could mess up your cockpit sometime. But as casper said, only paper book are approved by the FAA. So you really can't have electronic version on board. (but you can have a electronic map)

Logbook Pro has binders for sale, as long as you sign the entries like you would at the end of the page they should care.
