Can I connect a DVD player with built in surround sound with an AV receiver? Will the sound come out?

I have an old DVD player ( I bought it in 2011) with a built in surround sound system (Pioneer HTZ 101 DVD), I'm not really satisfied with the sound so I'm planning to buy a new AV receiver (Pioneer VSX-430) since I already have some good bookshelf speakers to go with it. I know that you can easily connect a regular DVD player to the AV receiver, but what if my DVD player is a player that has a built in amp / surround sound system. Will the sound still be able to be transmitted to the AV receiver (using an HDMI cable)?

I am not really clear about your equipment issue. If you have some dodgy old DVD/receiver /radio thingy and are replacing it with a new AV receiver . all you need do is throw 35 to 65 bucks at a new DVD deck and youre done, save for your speakers. If you want to cobble something out of the old system in your garage or such , thats up to you, but I wouldn't ruin my warranties on the new equipment by hay-wireing around with them. All DVD decks deal with encoded DVD discs, all AV receivers have a wide range of decoding options, thats what they do, obviously. There's nothing in the old gear that you need.
